No Fewer Than Six Perish in Crowd Crush at Ghana Military Recruitment Event
At least 6 individuals have died during a stampede at a armed forces enlistment event held in a stadium in the West African nation.
The Wednesday's "tragic" event seems to have been triggered by "a sudden rush of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates," announced a release from Ghana's armed forces.
22 others were hurt, among them 5 who remain in serious state.
A large crowd had gathered at El-Wak stadium, in the main city, the capital, with the aspiration of joining the military.
Ghana has a rate of joblessness among young people of approximately 32%, the latest government statistics show, and such recruitment events normally draw massive gatherings and often result in chaotic scenes.
The deadline to submit applications for this recruitment was extended by a week to accommodate additional candidates, as a number had faced difficulties in the application procedure.
Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the crush took place before the event's scheduled start of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.
The nation's leader John Mahama has gone to see the injured in medical care.
Calm has been reestablished, and the recruitment exercise has since started.
