Everyone is Encouraged to Join as the Additional Haim Member.
"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."
However, there remains one problem: The sender also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're not alone. A host of famous fans have publicly coveted the role.
It's clear something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.
Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos often feature them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."
"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to form a group."
"So anyone is invited to be the next Haim sister."
Historic Milestone
The band have called into a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.
They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.
"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"
The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.
"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."
Emotional Upheaval and Candor
The project emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.
The themes detail endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.
"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."
Evolution of Sound
That newfound resilience called for a new sound – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.
"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."
Stories and Shared Camaraderie
The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.
Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.
"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."
A Confident Future
It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.
They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.
However Haim will forever be their number one priority.
"We have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
